Tax Guide for Investment Advisors

Tax Guide for Investment Advisors is authored by Michael Todary, CPA CA, Partner at KT Partners LLP. The 2020 and 2019 Editions of the book were published by Thomson Reuters.

The 2016 and 2015 Editions were authored by John Mott, CPA CA and published by Carswell. John Mott’s practice merged with KT Partners LLP in 2017.

The book is not an easy find and copies generally go for a premium price on both Amazon ($110 CDN) and ebay ($140 CDN).

2020 Edition

In the Book’s Preface, Michael Todary writes:

“The book was intended to fill the gap in the tax literature between the dry technical publications intended for practicing tax professionals and the many (often superficial) guide books aimed at the lay investor.”

The 2020 Edition has 479 pages organized into six parts, as follows:

  • Part I: Tax Planning
  • Part II: Investment Instruments
  • Part III: Investment Income
  • Part IV: Special Investors
  • Part V: Investing Strategies
  • Part VI: Registered Plans

Although the book is now a bit dated, it is still considered to be a first-class tax publication. The principles of income taxation of investments have, in many instances, not changed significantly over the past four years. Plans are in the works for an updated version to be published in 2025.
